Internal Alterations and Sensitive Redesign of Country House

Internal alterations to the layout of this sentimental family property allowed for the design of a new shower room, snug, and utility room. This once dated house has been transformed into a relaxing, cosy and inviting family house in the countryside.

The property, of the late Georgian/early Victorian time era, started out as an elegant building with ornate detailing. However, it was in need of refurbishment in order to become a comfortable and enjoyable residence. The site is a remarkable plot of land with luscious green surroundings yet well connected to nearby towns.
A series of extensions that had previously been added had started to disrupt the flow of the property, and compromise how well the house functioned. A dominating issue for a growing family was the inadequate kitchen, which was both small and poorly connected to other living areas.

The design brief became centred on improving the circulation at ground and first floors and enhancing the connection between the kitchen and garden. In addition, technical improvements were to be made including upgrading insulation.

On the ground floor we removed the central WC to enhance and lighten the large hall, which now accommodates a beautiful piano.
Smaller areas were formed downstairs off the hallway, including a new WC and utility. This ensured there was adequate space at the rear of the property to form the large family kitchen which is well connected with the garden.

On the first floor, the family bathroom was refurbished and we provided an additional shower room from previously redundant space from the landing. Enclosing the landing did reduce the natural light, however this was addressed through the addition of a new elegant roof light above the stair well - a very attractive feature as you enter the house. Internal alterations were made to two of the bedrooms to ensure they both allow for double beds and side tables.

The property was re-wired, and a new heating system with underfloor heating was installed. Not only was this more efficient to run, but underfloor heating can be a good way to increase usable floor area (as there is no need for radiators). Planning permission was obtained for new sash windows and timber external doors. Again this drastically improved how efficient the building was to heat, but also improved the external appearance.

The result is a welcoming and characterful British country house, with charming joinery details and improved thermal efficiency.
